I've always been a fan of the supernatural, the spooky, the unexplained, and the entire Halloween season. Of course, this started as a child watching horror movies and playing with the Ouija board at sleepover parties.
Ouija boards are also called spirit boards or talking boards. They utilize a small heart-shaped planchette usually made of plastic or wood. They have a long and interesting history.
I've wanted to make some Ouija board planchette cookies for #HalloweenTreatsWeek for a few years now, and this year I finally purchased a planchette cookie cutter to do so.
These cookies are made from a cut out cookie recipe that I got from my mom. It's one she's used for decades and I'm not sure of its exact origin. This dough is simple to make, doesn't require any chilling, and make a nice light slightly crisp sugar cookie.
This cookie cutter is about 3-inches in size, so it makes a larger cookie. This recipe will make approximately 3-1/2 dozen cookies with this cookie cutter. You results will vary if you use a smaller or larger cookie cutter.
Then the cookies are baked and fully cooled on a cooling rack. Once they have cooled, you can decorate them however you want.
You can use royal icing, gel decorating icing, icing tubes, or even things like fun sprinkles or eyeball candies.
I looked at a lot of photos of various Ouija board planchettes to get ideas. I wanted to incorporate some of the words from a typical Ouija board like "Yes" and "No", "Good Bye", and "Ouija".
Eyes, moons, stars, and skulls were found on a lot of the planchettes I found. Many are simply a plain white planchette. Some contained words and some only a simple design, while some were quite intricate. This is something you can have fun with and try different designs and elements.
For my cookies I used a tube of white icing and a tube of black gel decorating icing, along with some eyeball candies and ghost sprinkles that I had from previous projects.
Additionally, I left a few plain mainly because we aren't big frosting people in our house, which is why my decorating is a bit minimal, while still trying to capture the essence of real planchettes.
I found this really cool purple Ouija board placemat at Big Lots this year. I couldn't resist grabbing one for taking photos and serving these cookies. I don't own a Ouija board, so this placemat was a great find. I also found this platter that would be a very suitable way to serve planchette cookies.
I think that these planchette cookies would be a perfect addition to a horror movie watching night, or a Halloween party. They would also be fun for a sleepover party.

Ouija Board Planchette Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-3/4 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Line two baking sheets with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
- In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, or a large bowl using a hand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar.
- Mix in the egg and vanilla.
- Add the baking powder and the flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition until combined (the last addition will be 3/4 cup).
- Gather the dough into a ball and then divide into two balls. Roll out one ball of dough first onto a floured surface to approximately 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut the dough with your cookie cutter and then use a thin metal spatula to transfer the cookie to the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake one sheet at a time on the middle rack for 6-8 minutes, just until the cookies are turning a little golden on the edges.
- Carefully transfer to cookies to a cooling rack and let them cool fully. While the first tray of cookies are baking, you can prepare the second and then continue to rotate between the two baking sheets.
- Decorate the cookies and let any icing or frosting dry fully. Store in an airtight container for 3-5 days.
