Whoooooo is looking forward to Halloween? I am! These chocolate covered pretzel owls are another creation for this year's #HalloweenTreatsWeek. You can see all of today's creations from participating bloggers at the bottom of this post.
Chocolate pretzel owls are pretty easy to put together and they can be a fun project for kids to help make. My kids helped to decorate some of these owls and enjoyed decorating and eating them. They also enjoyed grabbing up some stray candy corn and candy eyes to eat along the way.
All you need to makes these owls is mini pretzels, dark chocolate candy melts, medium candy eyeballs, Halloween colored sprinkles, and candy corn. For the candy corn, I used a mix of the traditional white/orange/yellow candies and the orange/brown ones.
Once the chocolate candy melts are melted, you use a fork to coat the pretzels one at a time and then place them on a silicone baking mat or a sheet of parchment paper.
Then you use a spoon and fill the two top small pretzels holes with chocolate. Then carefully place an eyeball candy in each hole, a candy corn below in the middle for a beak, and then two large sprinkles above the eyes for a feather tuft.
I would suggest not dipping more than two pretzels at a time and then decorating them fully. The chocolate candy melt can dry pretty quickly and you need the chocolate to be wet for the decorations to stick. Then dip another two pretzels and continue until you are finished.
When making these owls, just know that it's more than fine if they don't turn out perfectly. They are meant to be fun and they are meant to be something you can do at Halloween with children.
Eyeball candies will get chocolate on them, sprinkles may fall off, and things like that will happen; but that's okay and part of the process.
This recipe will make about 30 mini pretzel owls and can easily be doubled to make more for a party. The yield will vary based on the brand and exact size of your mini pretzels and how much chocolate you use to fill the eye holes.
Let the chocolate candy coating dry completely before removing them from the pan. You can gently break off any excess chocolate around the edges, if needed.
Serve or store in an airtight container. If you are storing them, be mindful that the feather tuft sprinkles may break or get knocked off if the container is moved around too much or the owls are touching each other.
Give these owls a try this autumn. If you are looking for another fun Halloween owl recipe, check out these Chocolate and Almond Owl Eye Cookies.
