This slow cooker cinnamon carrot applesauce is an easy and tasty side dish for all ages. It's also a great purée for babies and a delicious snack for toddlers.
Applesauce is pretty much always in the refrigerator and freezer at our house. It's one of my kids' favorite foods, and it's one that we commonly use as a "safe food" as we follow the Division of Responsibility in Feeding for our kids and family.
When my kids were first starting solids, I made a lot of baby food. I introduced spices early on with them. As they've grown, I continue to make applesauce, especially in the fall after apple picking.
I make plain applesauce, but I also like to add other fruits, vegetables, and/or spices to make it more interesting sometimes. We make it with blueberries, cranberries, zucchini, carrots, rhubarb, and more. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and other spices all pair nicely with apples as well.
This cinnamon and carrot applesauce is a great way flavor up your family's applesauce. The carrots are sweet and the cinnamon adds a very slight warmth to the sauce. I like to make this in my slow cooker because it's simple and hands off during cooking time. It's a easy way to make a simple snack or side dish.
When making applesauce, I use sweet apples, or a mix of sweet with a few tart ones added for depth of flavor. The carrots add extra sweetness here, but I think sweeter apples are best. You can use any sort of apples that you like.
Since we go apple picking, we always have a mix of all kinds of apples that I use for our cooking and baking. Some sweet apples that work well for applesauce are Gala, McIntosh, Fuji, 20 ounce, Golden Delicious, Envy, and so many more.
