Nutty, flavorful, a little sweet, and a little salty, these roasted turmeric and honey chickpeas make a great snack, appetizer, salad topping, and more.
Chickpeas are something we always have a can or two of in the pantry. They are such a great food to have on hand for adding to soups, salads, curry, making hummus, and so much more.
You can also roast them in the oven with different spices and flavors for a delicious snack (or salad or soup topping). This is a great way to make them nutty and flavorful. The inside is still creamy, but the outside turns all roasted and nutty in flavor.
These chickpeas (or garbanzo beans) are flavored with turmeric, coriander, a tiny dash of cayenne pepper, and then a bit of honey for sweetness and some salt. The warm spices and honey make a delicious flavor combination
Turmeric is a deeply yellow/orange colored spice made from a tuber. The flavor is a little bitter and can be pungent, but also a bit sweet. It also is quite stainy, so always be careful when handling turmeric or things like these chickpeas that are coated in turmeric. Your fingers may turn yellow!
While we like to have these as a side dish to an Indian-inspired dinner, or as a snack with drinks, roasted chickpeas are also lovely on a salad for some protein and texture. You can also use them as a garnish on a soup like butternut squash or pumpkin soups.
It's easy to change-up the spices and flavors on roasted chickpeas. You can make them sweet or spicy, or simply use just olive oil and salt. Play around with spices like black pepper, garlic, smoked paprika, cinnamon, and/or other spices you enjoy.
Honey isn't necessary, but I like the flavor combination with the turmeric and honey here. I always enjoy the sweet/spicy/salty combination. You can use maple syrup as well.
It is important to drain, rinse, and then dry the chickpeas before roasting them. This will help them to roast nicely rather than be wet and steam.
Give these a try soon for a new kind of snack!

I don't think I've ever used Tumeric, but I've seen so much about it recently I'm looking forward to giving it a try. I think I'll use it in a nice dish of shrimp with curry!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know turmeric had such interesting health properties! I would probably try it first on roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes or roasted vegetables.
ReplyDeletelakergirl2113@yahoo.com
I would like to take it and sprinkle it over hot popcorn. I'd also like to try it with yellow beans from Peru and add some garlic and onion.
ReplyDeleteI've actually never tried turmeric before, so I think I'd start out by using it to make the chickpea recipe you have above!
